Athletic Club beat Real Sociedad in the Basque derby at San Mamés, with Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón receiving a standing ovation before the match. The applause came for the third time in six days, after a prior ceremony in London where he was named the best men's goalkeeper in the world and received the Lev Yashin trophy. The derby was the 197th meeting between the two sides, and the game was 2-1 when Simón made a save that drew particular attention. Sid Lowe described the week as one that would be remembered by Simón and by his club's supporters.
